Jewellery design, gemstones and material intelligence

The work of

My jewellery work starts with looking: at colour, cut, proportion and what a material does in light. The design develops through those observations and through the practical question of how the object will be made.

Colour is part of the structure

A group of coloured stones can be read as a sequence. Contrast, repetition and the relative scale of each element determine the rhythm of the object. The setting participates in that composition by defining edges, spacing and the amount of visible metal.

The coloured-stone ring in the material archive and the articulated design study elsewhere on this site show two different arrangements: a compact repeated band and a suspended sequence. They give concrete form to the relationship between colour and construction.

From selection to fabrication

The work moves between selecting material, developing a proposal, modelling and examining how its parts connect. A convincing drawing is one stage in that process. The eventual object also depends on proportions, assembly and the practical details of fabrication.

This is why my interest in jewellery connects directly with GEMFORM. A design tool becomes useful when it can retain material constraints while allowing the arrangement to develop.

Crown & Signet

Crown & Signet is the associated jewellery project: a setting for distinctive objects, commissions and professional exchange. This personal portfolio introduces the material and design interests behind that work; the project’s own website provides its separate presentation.

Images here are design studies and material references. Stone identity, treatment and origin require their own evidence; a portfolio photograph is not a gemological certificate.
